The short version

You can play without an account and we do not want to know who you are. We do not sell data and there is no advertising network on this site. We do use Google Analytics to count how the game is played, which means Google sets cookies in your browser. What that involves is spelled out under Analytics below.

What a choice stores

  • Which thing you kept and which you let go, and the rating change.
  • An identifier for this browser. It comes from a random value we generate and put in a cookie; what the database holds is a hash of it. It is not derived from your name, your email, or your address, because we have none of those.
  • A short hash of your IP address and browser user agent, used to rate-limit voting and to stop one matchup being answered twice. Your raw IP is not stored next to your choices.

Our cookie

One cookie of ours, set the first time you make a choice. It exists so your profile page can show your own history and so the ranking counts you once per pair. It is not shared with anyone and it is not readable by other sites. Clearing it makes you a new person here, permanently. Google Analytics sets its own cookies separately, described below.

Local storage

Your running count and the milestones it triggers are kept in your browser and never leave your device.

Analytics

If analytics are enabled on this deployment we use Google Analytics 4. What we ask it to record is what happened on the page: a pair being shown, a choice being made, how long the choice took, and which page you opened. We never send it your name or your email, because we do not have them, and we never send it the identifier behind your choices.

Google Analytics works by setting its own cookies, which hold a random ID for your browser and let Google recognise it across visits and, depending on your Google account settings, across other sites that use the same product. That processing is Google's, not ours, and it is governed by Google's privacy policy. You can opt out for every site at once with Google's browser add-on, or block the cookies in your browser. Nothing about the game changes if you do.

Retention

Choices are kept for as long as the ranking exists, because they are the audit trail behind every rating. Rate-limit hashes expire within minutes.

Your rights

You can ask what we hold for your browser identifier and ask us to delete it. Email leonardo@sophiegames.net with the request. Deleting the cookie in your browser removes your side of the link immediately.
